Our Story
Rooted in the Mountain. Built for the World.
Balambuli Kwigate Coffee was founded to connect the exceptional arabica of Mount Elgon with the global buyers who value it most.
The Region
The Elgon Region
Our area of operation is the Eastern region of Uganda on the slopes of Mount Elgon — a volcanic massif that creates the ideal conditions for specialty arabica: high altitude, rich volcanic soils, distinct wet and dry seasons, and a farming tradition that spans generations. In December 2024, we opened our coffee processing factory in Mbale District, marking a pivotal step in our growth trajectory.
Our Mission
A Social Enterprise with a Clear Purpose
“We see our growth as directly intertwined with farmers' improvement in their income.”
BKC is a social enterprise whose growth is directly intertwined with the improvement of farmers' incomes. Our marketing strategy targets buyers of gourmet coffee — a segment less affected by the volatile price movements that harm smallholder farmers. By securing premium markets, we guarantee competitive prices and earnings for our farmers while enabling BKC to grow sustainably.
Operations
How We Work
Farmer Groups
We have organized 900 farmers into 200 groups constituted at the parish level, each comprising 50–100 members. These groups form the foundation of our supply chain and community engagement.
Farmer Field School
We overlay our farmer groups with the FAO-proven Farmer Field School model. Farmers meet regularly on a rotational basis — on each member's farm — to learn and implement agronomic best practices in a practical, hands-on setting.
Lead Farmers
Continuously selected and trained lead farmers serve as critical linchpins for mobilizing communities during training, cherry bulking, delivery to the washing station, and participation in broader social development initiatives.
Quality Processing
Our Mbale District washing station and drying facility processes farmer-supplied cherries to the exacting standards of the specialty market — ensuring maximum value that translates into above-market prices paid to farmers.
Digital Traceability
Through our digital infrastructure, we profile every farmer through intensive data collection, enabling us to market coffees that are ethically produced and traceable to specific farms — a critical advantage under new EU sustainability regulations.
Export Markets
Global Reach
BKC supplies Uganda's coffees to international markets including Germany, Saudi Arabia, and China, where our coffees are enjoyed across the retail shops of Cotti Coffee. We work with partners such as Darley to access gourmet markets that guarantee farmers competitive and stable earnings.
Leadership
Management
BKC is governed by an oversight Board of Directors that meets quarterly to review performance and ensure accountability. Day-to-day operations are led by an experienced management team.
